The efficacy of the Enterotube test system (Hoffmann La Roche) and of conventional biochemical methods was compared using 136 strains of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from the genital systems and aborted foetuses of German Thoroughbred stud horses; 127 strains were correctly identified by the Enterotube system. Of the nine incorrectly identified strains six were caused by abnormal biochemical reactions or Klebsiella strains and only three by failure of the new system. The authors consider the Enterotube system to be a simple and rapid method for the routine identification of Enterobacteriaceae.
