Helminthological and microbiological analyses of municipal waste of the city of Lódź as the criteria for the evaluation of the rate of environmental pollution

In a sanitary study of compost samples at various stages of fermentation and raw municipal waste from the city of Lodz, Poland, both microbiological and parasitological tests were conducted. 428 helminth eggs per kg raw municipal waste included Taenia sp., Toxocara sp. Trichuris sp. and a high number of Ascaris suum which were still capable of further development after 17 weeks of compost fermentation. After 21 weeks only 64 eggs/kg were found, none of which were viable. Crushing and sieving of the fermenting compost produced similar results. Cysts of Balantidium coli were discovered in both raw and fermenting compost, a few persisting for up to 21 weeks, although their viability is not confirmed.
