Polyarthritis was induced in male Wistar rats weighing 200 to 250 g by subcutaneous injection of Freund's incomplete adjuvant containing Mycobacterium tuberculosis; 7 days before the injection and daily throughout the development of the arthritis sunflower oil 4 or 8 ml/kg was given by mouth while controls received saline or light liquid paraffin. The size of the inflammatory lesion did not differ significantly between rats given sunflower oil and controls at any time, nor was there any significant difference between the groups in bodyweight decline or in T-cell function measured by the migration inhibition reaction of leucocytes against M. tuberculosis 20 days after induction of arthritis or by lymphocyte transformation in response to phytohaemagglutinin.
