5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), seems to be involved in depression and perhaps schizophrenia. A behavioral test of 5-HT action in rats was used to clarify the mechanism of its action and the effects of various drugs [lithium, diphenylhydantoin and chlorimipramine] used clinically in affective disorders.
