Iron and iron-blinding capacity of gastric juice

Fasting or histamine-stimulated gastric juice was collected from 57 subjects with normal gastric acidity, hyper-, hypo- or anacidity or with active gastric ulcer. The acidity and total Fe-binding capacity (TIBC) of the juice were measured. Fe concentration in gastric juice was lower in the patients with an- and hypoacidity but higher in those with gastric ulcer than in the normal subjects. Transferrin concentration or TIBC in gastric juice was lower at an- and hypoacidity and normal in patients with hyperacidity or gastric ulcer. After histamine stimulation TIBC increased slightly in hyperacidity. The differences between the subjects in unsaturated transferrin concentration were not significant and there was no significant correlation between Fe concentration and TIBC in fasting gastric juice.
