Increased interest in methods of detecting salmonella in animals and animal products has resulted from implementation of the Zoonoses Order. Examination of rectal swabs or faeces from every animal is time-consuming, expensive and may be unsuccessful in intermittent excretors of salmonella. Examination of bulked excreta (slurry) may be a simple, rapid and inexpensive alternative; a preliminary report is given. The technique has two limitations: little indication of the number of animals infected is given and, because salmonella may survive in slurry for several months, it may give a positive result even though animals are no longer infected.
