Male albino rats were fed from weaning on a purified diet alone or with certain amino derivatives of caproic acid to provide 0.3 to 3% of diet. After feeding for up to 92 days blood was sampled postprandially for estimation of glucose. The mean glucose concentration in plasma of the control group was 152 mg/100 ml. There was no significant differences between the hyperglycaemic effects of the 1 and 3% levels of each derivative in the diet; the pooled results obtained with the 2 levels for each substance gave significant differences in plasma glucose:norleucine 190, norvaline 186, monosodium glutamate 183, methionine 172, epsilon -aminocaproic acid 172 and leucine 167 mg/100 ml. All the derivatives gave higher glucose tolerance curves and, occasionally, glucosuria.
