After briefly reviewing the physicochemical properties of hvaluronic acid and the data of literature concerned with histochemical findings of mucopolysaccharidcs in the nasal mucosa, the authors carried out a research to observe the behavior of hyaluronic acid in the nasal mucosa in relation to some diseases of the nose. The authors examined the nasal mucus of 25 individuals, out of whom 10 had to be considered as being normal thanks to the macroscopic aspect of the nasla mucosa and its secretion, 10 suffered from mucopurulent rhinitis, and 5 from acute coryza. In order to ascertain the content of hvaluronic acid the authors made the dosage of both hexosamine and glycuronic acid, the presence of which in the. molecule of hyaluronic acid is characterized by an equimolecular relationship. The value of hyaluronic acid is obtained indirectly from the value of glycuronic acid by stechiometric calculation. Relying upon the results of they research, the authors conclude that the content of hyaluronic acid in the nasal mucus varies from man to man, but it increases in the presence of actual phlogistic phenomena involving the nasal fossa.
