Neurotoxicity of some selected hydrocarbons

Under the conditions of these experiments, none of the hydrocarbons tested caused demonstrable histologic damage to the central nervous system. The oxygen uptake of rat brain slices in vitro was not altered by saturation with p-tert-butyltoulene (TBT) at room temperature. However, the clinical picture in rats suggested that all the compounds except methylstyrene had a toxic effect on the central nervous system. In confirmation of this effect, EEG tracings showed that p-tert-butyltoluene caused marked cerebral stimulation followed by profound depression, while benzene caused depression preceded by milder stimulation
