Resistance to DDT was found in Anopheles sacharovi Favr. (A. maculipennis sacharovi) in Azerbaijan (Soviet Union) in 1971. Tests were made in 1971-1972 of a 91.5% solution of dichlorvos (DDVP) and a 20% granular formulation of the same insecticide against the resistant strain. Disks of peat were placed in dichlorvos solution, the pressed peat absorbing the solution at a ratio of 1:7 by weight. The effectiveness of the insecticide was evaluated by two criteria: the number of adults in rooms with dichlorvos as compared with that in rooms without the insecticide, and the death-rate of blood-fed mosquitos after exposure for 6 h to the insecticide followed by transfer to untreated rooms; the death rates of mosquitos were determined after 24 h. The granular formulation was found to be unsuitable for mosquito control in rooms, but the peat-bands gave good results. One peat-band containing 12-24 g dichlorvos solution in a room of 50-60 m3 caused 70-100% mortality of mosquitos. This effect was observed for 4-5 weeks. In rooms with such disks, mosquitos were absent for 2-2.5 months, whereas in untreated premises they were present at all times.
