Angiographic findings in the hypothenar hammer syndrome

The angiographic findings in 6 patients with the hypothenar hammer syndrome are presented. True aneurysm formation was seen in 4 of these cases and in 2 of these severe digital ischemia was present without occlusion of the palmar arterial system. Embolism to digital arteries from thrombi formed on the damaged intima of the distal ulnar artery appears to play a significant part in digital ischemia in some, and possibly many, cases with this syndrome. Brief comments on technique, differential diagnosis and indications for angiography are included.
