Pediatric surgery in India through the eyes of a foreign visitor

The development of pediatric surgery in India is traced from the 1st establishment of a department at the Trivandrum Medical College in 1957, to the present 7 postgraduate teaching hospitals and 14 Medical Colleges which have independent Pediatric Surgery Units. Comparisons are made with the status of this field in Europe. While much progress has been made in a short time in India, there are many shortcomings in organization, equipment and staffing needs. Socio-economic aspects are discussed.
