Passage of urine through the renal pelvis was termed discontinuous transport, whereas the continuous transport has its starting point in the proximal ureter. The pyeloureteral junction was studied as the direct functional and anatomical connection between the pelvis and the ureter, without any intercommunicating segment. The renal pelvis was the most proximal part of the renal pathways, where urine transport in general and the continuous propagation of action potentials started. The renal pelvis, with intact continuity of the upper urinary tract, was the location of the pacing center.
