Side effects of oral contraceptives are discussed. Although the negative side effects of oral contraceptives have received considerable publicity, their incidence is lower than that of pregnancy complications, and their use is safer than that of other contraceptives when the corresponding risk of pregnancy is also considered. Oral contraceptives have been used therapeutically in a number of gynecological disorders. The effects of oral contraceptives on the liver and blood vessels are discussed on the basis of the published literature. The multifactorial nature of the side effects of oral contraceptives is emphasized.
