La pratique des soins à domicile s'inscrit dans la tendance à la substitution de la médecine ambulatoire à la pratique hospitalière. Un tel transfert est souhaitable tant du point de vue de la réduction des coûts que de l'amélioration de la qualité de vie des patients. Le soin des plaies à domicile par des infirmières libérales entre tout à fait dans ce cadre.
