1. Two vital dyes, Patent Blue V and Evans Blue were chosen for study with the object of devising a test for lymphatic patency. 2. The behaviour of the dyes was observed in animals in order to design a test that might be used in man. Patent Blue proved the more efficient dye. 3. Their toxicity was tested with heavy doses in animals. 4. Patent Blue was used successfully to outline the main lymphatic pathways of the lower limbs of patients suffering from the after effects of deep venous thrombosis. 5. The results are discussed and possible applications of this method of deep lymphangiography to problems in clinical surgery are mentioned. The physical processes by which solutions of dye may pass rapidly along lymphatics are considered.
