This case presents some of the problems which result from the appearance of a common tropical disease in temperate areas where it is encountered infrequently. There occurred late diagnosis, delayed hospitalization, and treatment problems. A lepra reaction developed coincident with too vigorous sulfone therapy. The unusual situation was encountered for this area in which susceptible children lived in close contact with the patient. Such problems may well become more common because of increasing air travel.
