The effect of irradiation with 60Co on the distribution of fluorescing lymphocytes was measured in suspensions of human peripheral lymphocytes and mouse spleen lymphocytes. Fluorescence was induced by labeling the immunoglobulins [Ig] on B [bone marrow-derived] lymphocyte membranes with the aid of human or murine anti-Ig treated with fluorescein. 60Co irradiation inhibits the synthesis of lymphocyte membrane Ig. The inhibition of cell metabolism induced by radiation is thought to be due to a lesion in the microtuble system.
