An isolated postductal variant of the coarctation of the aorta was induced in 40 dogs. Development of collateral vessels was studied in parallel with the assessment of the renal function, hemodynamic indices and homeostasis. Functional shifts after the stenosis of the thoracic aorta normalized far before the development of collaterals as a result of mobilization of the compensatory mechanisms; elevation of arterial pressure above the site of stenosis, an increase in the tone of the efferent arterioles of the nephron glomerulus and an increase in hemoglobin content and blood erythrocyte count occurred.
