Because of the increasing number of highly effective new drugs and because of the poor correlation between animal studies and results observed in human infants, it behooves us to be cautious in prescribing for the pregnant woman. Panelists at a recent meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics reminded the doctors in the audience that "the administration of drugs is ultimately a medical responsibility and all drugs (except those essential to preserving the mother's life) should be avoided particularly during the first three months of pregnancy".
