Dysgenesis mesodermalis of the cornea (Peters' anomaly) associated with cleft lip and palate

Peter's anomaly consists of a developmental defect of Descemet's membrane and the deep stromal layers of the cornea with or without adhesions of the iris to the cornea. This case in a 7 yr old girl is unusual, since corneal opacities in both eyes are limited to the center and the inferonasal quadrant. The patient also has bilateral cleft lip and palate. The iris adhesions as well as the straightening of the limbus in this quadrant are due to faulty cleavage, a process which begins normally in the 4th mo. Although the fusion of the medial nasal processes with the maxillary processes is already completed in the 7th wk, a relationship between the incomplete fusion of the processes in the formation of the upper lip and jaw and the faulty cleavage appears evident.
