A critical analysis of the aims and achievements of the multiple-choice type of examination for Part 1 of Memobership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists is provided. In addition to a description of the system of marking and an evaluation of the results to date, comments are offered on reciprocity between South Africa and the United Kingdom in regard to the Part 1 examination.
