Fluoridation in Cumbria. A clinical study

Fluoridation was started in part of Cumbria in 1969. Workington and Cockermouth, the 2 major towns in the fluoridated sector, were compared with the nearest comparable towns, Carlisle and Penrith, in the low-fluoride sector (F <0.1 X 10-6). Dental examinations were made in first-year school entrants continuously resident in either community in April and May 1975. To obviate possible bias, about 40% of the children were 'decoys', not meeting requirements of age, residence or nonreceipt of F tablets, topicals or sealants. Analysis of data was made independently by community medicine specialists. Caries experience in the fluoridated community was 46% less and site attack 50% less than in the nonfluoridated community.
