The effect of Fe and folic acid tablets supplied antenatally was studied in 77 urban Zambian patients with Hb values of 70% (10.2 g/100 ml) or over at first visit; the Fe was given as ferrous sulphate 200 mg 3 times a day and folic acid was 5 mg daily. No significant difference was found between treated and untreated groups. A Hb value of 80% (10.2 g/100 ml) or over at first visit was no guide to the likelihood of anaemia at term. The practice of providing treatment for these patients on the basis of the Hb value at first visit is of doubtful value.
