Effective surgical treatment of ptosis in man depends on the accurate assessment of degree of levator strength and of normal skin fold position. Several operations have been devised to correct ptosis. The levator muscle may be shortened using a conjunctival or a skin approach. The lid may be suspended from the frontalis muscle or using the corrugator supercilaris muscle. Achievement of symmetry with regard to position of the lid, width of the palpebral fissure and lid folds is the key to real success in ptosis surgery.
