Th mother's disease was a mild, persistent arthritis and a dermal vasculitis which would usually be referred to as hypersensitivity angiitis. The infant had severe peripheral gangrene and evidence of pulmonary and cardiac involvement consistent with polyarteritis nodosa of infancy. Although no viral product was demonstrated, the clinical courses of this mother and child are consistent with a virus-induced antigen-antibody complex disease. The elevated serum immunoglobulin levels in the infant strongly suggest that antigenic stimulation occurred before birth.
