Insufficiency of myocardial contraction in adults and children due to various mitral pathologies (e.g., valve failure, stenosis and rheumatic disease) and major defects of the interventricular septum is discussed including surgical and drug treatment. An overloading of the left ventricle (but not the right) as a result of increased blood flow will lead to severe circulatory insufficiency.
