Effect of the Lippes loop on the uterine mucosa and cervix uteri after its long-term usage

367 women had the Lippes Loop intrauterine Spiral removed after 3-6 years of use. Histological examination of the uterine endometrium and cervix was performed in 100 of these women to determine the presence of any changes caused by the prolonged presence of the device. Pathological changes were revealed in 74% of these subjects. 39% of the examinations revealed the presence of endometritis. An alteration of the portio vaginalis of the uterine cervix was revealed even in those women in which no pathological changes of the endometrium had taken place. This alteration raised the percentage of complications. Use of these devices is considered to be safe for up to about 3 years, after which it is deemed necessary to control the state of the genital organs of the user.
