A major genetic determinant of resistance to allogeneic bone-marrow grafts was mapped in the H-2D region of murine chromosome 17, the same region in which the haemopoietic-histocompatibility, Hh-1, locus responsible for parent-to-F1 hybrid resistance was previously mapped. Hh-1 is thus regarded as a structural gene locus coding for cell surface structures selectively expressed on haemopoietic cells. Variations in the strength of resistance to allogeneic and xenogeneic (rat and hamster) bone-marrow grafts were studied in several unrelated mouse strains and in segregating backcross progeny. Hh-gene products seem to exist also on the surface of rat and hamster cells, but their specificity differs from those of many mouse strains. A small number of Ir-like genes regulate resistance by conferring responder or nonresponder status for Hh-gene products.
