Side effects of i.p. administrations to laboratory rodents are reviewed. Causative factors are classified into injection-conditioned effects (internal injuries, faulty injection, infection), vehicle-conditioned effects (foreign body reaction, tumor induction, RES partial blockade and side effects due to the actual test substances themselves (diffuse peritonitis, tumor induction, RES alteration). In the lack of parallel pathological-anatomical investigations, occasional false interpretations of research results are possible, which can be disadvantageous to the pharmaceutical-pharmacological primary screening (false selection) and can produce unsought mathematical modelling.
