Factors leading to hypernatraemic dehydration in the young infant are described. An analysis is made of 23 infants with a high mean birth wt. who became hypernatraemic in the 1st wk of life. Factors which may have been responsible for this are discussed. An account is given of the effects of 5 different milks on the urine osmolality and serum values of a number of different variables in 59 infants. Suggestions are made as to how hypernatraemia might be avoided in early life on the basis of the cases described and the investigation reported.
