An original classification of instruments for and quantitative methods of microbiological investigation of air (bacteria and virus traps) was developed. All instruments and methods of quantitative analysis of airborne microflora are divided into 3 classes. The 1st class includes instruments recording the concentration of aerosol particles contaminated with bacteria or viruses (phages) by impact on the surface of a nutrient gel (agar or gelatin), separating aerosol particles from the dispersion medium. The distinguishing feature of methods and instruments of the 2nd class is the trapping of the aerosol particles in a liquid or suspending in it particles extracted from the aerosol by other methods to determine the total number of microorganisms in a unit volume of air. The 3rd class includes combined methods and instruments from the first 2 classes.
