Total body potassium, acid-base status and serum electrolytes in acute diarrhoeal disease

Total body K (TBK), acid-base status and serum electrolytes were measured in 49 children with acute diarrhoeal disease, on admission to hospital and after rehydration. TBK was usually low, lowest in patients with lowest blood pH. TBK and serum Na and K concentrations were not related. Most of the children were malnourished and hyponatramia was common.
