Considerations on the interpleural ligament (de Morosow)

Morosow's intrapleural ligament, diversely interpreted by the Authors, is studied on thoracic sections of twelve adults. This ligament, divided into fibrous lamellae which play the part of vessel and nerve -carrying lamellae, may be rather difficult to recognize when it is slightly developed or else when it is immersed in mediastinal fat. It is most easily recognized at the level of the retro-esophageal pleural culs-de sac which it links, merging at the sides with the sub-pleural tissue. It continues towards the diaphragm on the one hand, with the sheath of the esophagus, becoming phreno-esophageal membrane, and on the other hand, with the pre-aortic conjunctive formations described by V. Virno at the level of the aortic opening of the diaphragm. Towards the superior portion of the mediastinum, this interpleural ligament mingles with the prevertebral conjunctive laminae which form the retro-esophageal fascia, but it loses its pleural connexions at the level of the base of the neck because of the interposition of the vasculo-nervous bundles of the neck between it and the pleura.
