Congenital deafness has a telling elTect in that it invariably involves speech. This obviously results in a late initiation of the learning processes and accumulation of knowledge in an age when education is a paramount necessity. A large segment of congenital deafness should be preventable. More empha.sis is needed in the area of education and training of the ever expanding numbers of deaf and speech defectives.
