The various types of fracture of the first phalanx, encountered in 79 horses treated at the Surgical Clinic at Utrecht in the Netherlands, are described with diagrams. It is suggested that short sagittal fractures have a relatively good prognosis, though healing may be hastened by screwing, which may or may not be indicated. When sagittal fractures run the whole length of the bone, the indication for screwing is described as absolute, at least where there is separation of the bone fragments. Screwing is not recommended for comminuted fractures.
