The continuing importance of this condition in southern Germany is stressed. Summer cases tend to be acute, with subacute and chronic forms persisting until the following summer. Fever is followed by exhaustion often necessitating destruction, and transmission is by infected syringes or by ectoparasites. Recurrent low fever suggests a latent form. Haematological methods of diagnosis proved unreliable; accurate diagnosis depends on the use of the gel precipitation tests. Control is thus obtained by routine blood testing and rigorous isolation of reactors - two subsequent clear tests being regarded as evidence of resolution. Regular temperature checks and elimination of ectoparasites help materially in control.
