Acute postoperative pain is common after tonsillectomy; most patients require opiate analgesia, e.g., 80% of the children need analgesics in the hospital and at home. However, surgeons, patients and relatives have a number of misconceptions concerning pain treatment and this often results in inadequate analgesia. Moreover, opiates cause respiratory depression, sedation, nausea and vomiting. Combination of diclofenac sodium plus B vitamins could be a safe and inexpensive postsurgical analgesic strategy, mainly because this is available in many care facilities, particularly in developing countries.
