The role of the fluid in transport of hypophysiotropic hormones and in the regulation of hypophyseal secretions was studied. Fluid from the 3rd ventricle of 4 hydrocephalic human males with endoventricular catheters was analyzed. The concentration of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone ranged between 50 and 150 pg/ml fluid. Values for the blood of 14 normal subjects ranged from 20 to 40 pg/ml of serum. Such a difference between serum and fluid levels may indicate hormone diffusion from the hypothalamus to the fluid.
