Sixty-two blood samples obtained from 62 full-term newborn infants in the nursery of the National Taiwan University Hospital were analysed for total, ester and free cholesterols and indirect and direct bilirubins at the same time. The day-of-life-specific mean values of serum indirect and direct bilirubins and those of serum total, ester and free cholesterols on the first consecutive 5 days of life were determined. The extent of neonatal jaundice in Chinese newborn infants was exaggerated in terms of intensity and duration, when compared with that seen among newborn infants of American and European countries. 14 There was an abrupt and remarkable rise in the concentration of each fraction of serum cholesterol 1 day after birth. There was a fairly good positive correlation between the serum levels of indirect bilirubin and those of total cholesterol. No correlation between the values of indirect bilirubin and blood cholesterol free ester ratios was noted. Factors such as diet, turnover of stored lipids from the liver and excessive hemolysis, which might be responsible for the abrupt rise of cholesterol in newborn infants, are briefly reviewed and discussed. It is very hard to ascribe a simple factor to explain the increase of blood cholesterol in connection with hyperbilir-ubinemia in neonates.
