Demonstration of fibrinolytic split products during administration of hormonal contraceptives

Blood levels of fibrinolytic split products were studied in 576 women treated with oral contraceptives (Ovosiston, Non-Ovlon, Deposiston, and Sequenz-Ovosiston) and in 185 women with normal cycles. An increase of fibrinolytic split products was seen in treated women, contrasting with the low values noted during normal menstrual cycles. During the first 2/3 of the treated cycles these levels tended to vary widely, but they were high in the final 1/3 for all 4 preparations. These findings are discussed in terms of estrogenic interference with fibrinolysis and secondary fibrinolysis following slight intravascular clotting due to gestagens.
