Cortisol and growth hormone were estimated in blood plasma of 26 infants with kwashiorkor, 13 with marasmus and 21 healthy controls. Cortisol was high in infants with kwashiorkor and marasmus, especially the former, in relation to a constant body mass. There was a positive correlation between plasma cortisol and the body mass deficit in kwashiorkor and in infants with low mass for age. Growth hormone was high in both malnourished groups.
