An examination has been made of the effect of heat on cottonseed oil as part of an investigation of the carcinogenic action of heated fats. Heated at atmospheric pressure in the presence of catalytic iron cottonseed oil distills at 334-372° and one product of this distillate has been identified as palmitic acid. There is evidence that cottonseed oil heated to 340° under reflux is readily decarboxylated and that one of the products formed is palmitone.
