Of 2,289 adults admitted to hospital in Blantyre, Malawi, from October 1972 to October 1973, 86 (3.7%) had hookworm infection. This was the commonest cause of anaemia. Schistosoma haematobium was found in 38, S. mansoni in 10, Wuchereria bancrofti in 3, Ascaris in 23, Strongyloides in 8 and Taenia in 2.
