Functional coefficient of nucleic acid specificity

The DNA specificity coefficient (CS) of 27 microbes and 95 viruses infecting them were compared to those of certain mammals, including man, and more than 40 viruses infecting them. The CS, while taxonomically characteristic of an organism, does not permit judgment of the functional DNA activity. Certain correlations were established between the CS of virus and organism. The concept of the functional specificity coefficient (FCS) is introduced and discussed with respect to evolutionary and pharmacologic aspects.
