Micronema deletrix in the brain of a horse

A Quarter Horse mare from Indiana, USA, with clinical symptoms suggestive of viral encephalitis was found to have microscopic lesions throughout the brain which were most severe and extensive in the mid-brain. Pathological changes included vasculitis, meningeal inflammatory cell infiltrations, perivascular infiltration of inflammatory cells and focal perivascular necrosis. Micronema deletrix was found in the Virchow-Robin spaces and in the brain parenchyma near the blood vessels.
