A prospective epidemiological study on coronary heart disease in a sample of 10,000 males aged 45 to 64, known as the Puerto Rico Heart Health Program, is being conducted at the Department of Medicine of the School of Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico. The justifications for such study, the objectives, and a general description of the research desing have been presented in this paper. It has included sampling interviews, recorded data, laboratoriy procedures, specific clinical and electrocardiograpic criteria, dieatary evaluation, quality control measures, morbidity and mortality surveillance and data analysis.
