1. The early recognition and treatment of injuries to abdominal viscera in children is imperative to obtain optimal results. 2. All cases of penetrating wounds of the abdomen should be explored surgically. 3. Indications for exploration following blunt trauma to the abdomen are: (A) Pneumoperitoneum; (B) Positive abdominal paracentesis; (C) Increase in pain, tenderness, rigidity and decrease in peristalsis; (D) The onset of shock or continued shock after proper resuscitative measures; (E) A drop in the hematocrit and hemoglobin; (F) White Count of 15,000 to 20,000 soon after trauma; (G) X-rays suggestive of increased size of splenic shadow.
