By combining 2 equations - that relating the weight and area of a skin snip to its largest radius and that expressing the numbers of microfilariae emerging in terms of the time the skin snip is immersed in saline - the authors derive an expression to calculate the microfilarial density of Onchocerca volvulus in skin snips. A nomogram is constructed to allow these combined calculations to be made, and estimated values using this were found to show close correlation with those obtained by direct observation.
