164 ketotic cows were treated with 20 mg betamethasone (intramuscularly) + 100 g glucose (intravenously) and 191 were similarly treated with 100 g prednisolone + glucose; recovery rate after 1 treatment was 77 and 75% respectively. The % recovery after 1 treatment was higher in cows treated in May-Sept. than in those treated in Oct.-Nov. or Dec.-April (90% cs. 85 or 71%, P < 0.005), and higher for cows treated >5 wk post partum than for those treated 3-5 or less than or equal to 2 wk post partum (84% vs. 76 or 61%, P < 0.05). Age and individual milk yield had no apparent effect on recovery rate.
